The piece
Robin Williams' daughter spotted an AI fake of her father in one listen. A video went around on X claiming to show him talking about conspiracies. On Monday, Zelda Williams said what it actually was.
If you've spent your life training an ear or an eye that nobody seems to pay for anymore, stay with me, because this one is about you. Here's the part everyone skipped past. She didn't run it through a detection tool.
Her words: "Anyone who claims to be a fan who believes it clearly listened to his movies on mute because that voice is robotic and terrible." She knew the voice. One pass, and she had it. And thousands of people shared it anyway. That's not a celebrity skill. That's a craft skill.
Hearing what's wrong is something you trained for years to do, and most people watching genuinely cannot do it. And then there's her other line: "a human made a robot create it." Somebody built that thing. And somebody in this line of work is going to get asked to build the next one.
I've sat in a booth and re-recorded one line forty times to get a single breath right. That's the thing that gives these away. Nobody does that anymore. Now the honest part. The voice gets better every month. "I can spot it" is not a career, and I won't pretend it is.
So do two things. Say what's wrong out loud, in the actual words (the sibilance, the room tone, the breath) because that vocabulary is turning into paid work and almost nobody outside this trade has it. And decide your line this week, before a client asks. Write down what you won't make with a dead person's likeness. The people who get caught out are the ones deciding in the moment.
