Instagram changed its AI rules on Sunday, and the headline version is close enough to true to be useless.
The penalty isn't for using AI. It's for being AI and not saying so.
On Sunday Instagram renamed its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile", and for the first time said undisclosed AI personas will get less reach.
What the headlines said
"Instagram cracks down on AI." Which is close enough to true to be useless to you.
What the label actually covers
Profiles where the person you're looking at was generated or substantially created by AI. That's it.
What it doesn't cover
Editing photos with AI. Polishing a caption. Making a graphic. You're a real person using tools. No label needed.
The new part: there's a cost now
Don't label a synthetic persona -> reduced reach. Do label it -> no penalty for being AI. Concealment is what gets punished.
Instagram's own reason
"People don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated."
The part nobody's answered
What about a disclosed AI version of a real person, with consent? That's this account. Instagram's wording doesn't say. I don't know either.
The line is between using AI and being AI
Most of you are on the safe side and have been hiding anyway. Stop.
