For three years. This week they went public.
Kathleen Kennedy and ~120 filmmakers, actors and tech execs just published a framework sorting all AI use in film into three tiers.
Tier 1: the tools already in your software
Denoising, upscaling, audio cleanup, rotoscoping. Nobody's arguing about this one, it's copyrightable, it's yours.
Tier 2: "Human Generative Workflows"
An artist directs a generative model, hands still on the wheel. Their words: human-crafted, and copyrightable.
Tier 3: pure prompt output
No human hand on it anywhere. Not copyrightable. Their own document: this is where the word "slop" comes from.
It names your department
The framework's own text: this logic applies in sound, music, editing, and the writing room. Not abstract.
What it isn't, yet
A private framework, not law. No guild has confirmed signing it into contract language. Real gap, stated honestly.
Ask Which Tier They Mean
Comment which tier describes most of your work.
