It's not a chatbot story. Here's what it's actually about.
A Chinese lab called Moonshot AI just released the actual weights for Kimi K3, 2.8 trillion parameters, the largest open-weight AI system ever built. And it changes something most people haven't clocked yet.
The Benchmarks
It performs close to Anthropic's and OpenAI's best closed models on coding and reasoning, at roughly a third of the running cost. Free, open, and nearly as good. Here's the part that actually matters.
The Translation
This isn't really about chatbots. This is the raw engine every cheap rough-cut, auto-caption, and auto-color tool gets built on top of, and that engine just got free to copy. Which means something specific for your stack.
What It Actually Threatens
The price floor on "good enough" AI tooling just dropped again, anything pattern-matchable and already commodity-priced gets cheaper, whether you opted in or not. But there's a real limit to this.
What It Doesn't Touch
"Free and open" isn't the same as "already in your NLE." Someone still has to build, test, and ship the actual product, that takes months, not a weekend. So what's actually worth protecting?
My Honest Take
Every time the raw intelligence underneath these tools gets cheaper, the value shifts even harder toward whoever knows which output to trust and which to throw out. A free model doesn't come with that judgment built in.
Protect The Judgment
Kimi K3: the world's biggest AI model, free to build on.
