Absolutely No Goddamn AI."

Guillermo del Toro at Comic-Con vs. the entry-level-jobs fight underneath.

That's what Guillermo del Toro told a packed Hall H at Comic-Con last Friday, defending the hand-crafted 3D conversion of Pan's Labyrinth for its 20th anniversary.

His Real Argument

It wasn't taste. Entry-level animation and VFX work is how the next generation of editors and directors actually learns this craft.

What Gets Broken

Cut enough of that work out, and a studio saves money this quarter, while quietly breaking the pipeline that trains whoever's supposed to replace us.

Not Everyone Took The Hard Line

Editor Hal Watmough: AI as a tool under real human judgment. Dave Clark: "You can't prompt your way to the ends."

Where I Land

Every day in the studio, I'm doing the work of what used to be 8 or more people, camera, audio, lighting, prompter, CG, directing, editing. A literal one-man band.

My Honest Take

I'm overqualified for a lot of the work available to me right now. So I'm finding a new way. You can come find one with me.
